A Chance to Make a Difference

Wesley House Alum Amy Britton writes:

At the Back 2 School Fair at Wesley Chapel, we provide school supplies free-of-charge to children and youth entering K–12th grades.

The Back 2 School Fair will be held Tuesday, August 10th.

I would like to have 8 volunteers signed up for each of two 2-hour shifts, 12:30 – 2:30 and 2:15 – 4:15. Volunteer assignments may include: greeting families at the door, registration, handing out supplies to the children, guarding the back door, monitoring the picnic, keeping the picnic area clean, and playing with children after they receive supplies.

If you can help, please call Wesley Chapel at 513-721-6204 or email Amy at wcmcvolunteers@fuse.net. And yes, this can count toward your community service hours!

Wesley Chapel is a United Methodist non-profit organization that helps meet the educational, recreational, and spiritual needs of children in impoverished inner-city surroundings. It is located at 80 E. McMicken St. here in Cincy.

Bibles

A couple of new versions of the Bible came to my attention today. The first is the new Common English Bible (CEB). The CEB was developed with "readability" in mind. It boasts a great group of editors and translators from across denominational lines. If you visit their website, you can click on FREE NEW TESTAMENT, and they will send you a paperback copy. You have to make your request before August 1.

The other new version of the Bible is The Wesley Study Bible. Did you know John Wesley made comments on the entire Bible? This version of the Bible allows you to access Wesley's comments on whichever passage of the Bible you choose to read. If you buy it here at Cokesbury, you can get a 36% discount this month. The cover isn't exciting, but I'm looking forward to seeing what this version has to offer.

Sweet Children at Baptism

Aren't these adorable children? They're participating in my granddaughter's baptism service. The oldest of the group was helping the others "read" the service.

Wesley Rocks!

Kelly Brown did a great job registering students at Spotlight. Kelly will be back next week to help out some more. So glad the incoming students are spotting our new sign on the campus tour and then looking for us at Spotlight.

Lily's Baptism

My husband and I, along with my Dad who's here all the way from Virginia, are leaving tomorrow morning for a short family vacation. We're headed up to my son-in-law's hometown, Janesville, Wisconsin, and will celebrate our granddaughter Lily's baptism. That's Lily on the left. My husband will do the baptism, but I got to help write the service. One of Lily's godparents is Jewish, so we wanted to make sure the service honors her traditions as well as those of Lily and her parents.

While I'm away, one of the Wesley House interns, Kelly Brown, will fill in at Spotlight. Everyone will love meeting Kelly, and she'll have lots of Wesley House pens. UC Freshmen, we are so happy to meet you!
